Do you already have your new year’s resolutions decided? We’d like to suggest one to add to your list. I’ll admit this isn’t going to be a ground-breaking announcement, but quite honestly, the folks here at GAMA Air have seen time and time again the troubles that a home’s central heating and air conditioning system can have from neglecting a simple task: Changing the air filter. I know you’ve heard this before, but like I said... we’ve responded to calls that ended up being major repairs and a significant factor in the failure was a forgotten air filter. Let’s face it, we’re all busy with important activities and sometimes time just gets away from us. For example, can you believe 2017 is done and gone? So set a goal this year to replace your air filter regularly. Here’s four reasons why you should:
1. Keeps your system clean – The main function of a simple air filter is to keep the components inside the unit clean. Whether you have a furnace or a fan coil or an air handler, as the air travels through the ductwork and arrives at the unit the filter will trap debris and particles from the air preventing this dirt and grime from building up on your heating and cooling system. This in turn extends the operating life of the parts inside your furnace or heat pump.
2. Keeps your system running efficiently – Another effect of a system that is running clean is that it runs at peak efficiency. When dust and debris accumulate inside the system, it impedes the heating or cooling process. Your equipment has to work harder and or longer to keep your house comfortable. But with regular air filter changes, your central heating and air system runs as close as possible to the conditions when it was new.
3. Cuts back on dust – Although no furnace or air handler filter can remove all dust from your house, a higher quality filter will trap more and smaller particles and reduce the amount of these particles that are circulated throughout your home. A common misconception is that only a small amount of the dust in your home will make its way into the ductwork. However, a well-designed ductwork system will pull close to 100% of your home’s air through your system in a given period. The better the filter, the less dust there will be circulating throughout your home.
4. Cuts back on allergens – A high quality filtration system can go a long way to help cut back on allergy issues. There are several types that can help. There are several key methods and styles that include HEPA filtration, UV sanitization, active carbon, and or ionization. This can provide significant relief. There are high-end and low-end varieties of such filters that can provide decent relief. Another method that is simpler is to use a high-end cartridge filters with a high MERV rating (9 or higher) that help with minor allergies. These can be fitted into your existing system with only minor changes.
As you can see, nothing ground breaking here, just a simple reminder to follow common sense. And of course a responsible homeowner such as yourself surely takes these reminders seriously.
